The Etna Wine route
Food and wine itineraries, wine tastings, unforgettable wine experiences on the trail of old traditions
Located between the cities of Taormina and Catania, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, rises the active highest Volcano in Europe with its 3340 meters of altitude, Mount Etna, Unesco Heritage from 2013
The frequent eruptions have changed the appearance and conformation of the landscape, making the land even more lush, fertile and flourishing. The most important fruit that Etna produces is certainly the vine. We already have the first testimonies in Homer’s tales. It is said that Polifemo, the one eyed giant, got drunk with the Etna wine. That wine comes from grapes that grew spontaneous on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Therefore the Etna wine tradition has very deep roots, proud of a product with a strong personality and volcanic characteristics: this is the Etna wine. Etna wines over the years have increasingly managed to impose themselves in Italy and abroad like all Sicilian enology.
A way to promote the enotourism: the Etna wine route
As a result, the Province of Catania created the Etna Wine Route. Because this is a tool with the aim of enhancing and promoting the territories with a high-vocation wine-producing. A route winds through several towns within the Etna Park.
The Etna Wine route is a crossroads of perfumes, flavours, landscapes, art, culture, wine, traditions, gastronomy. Most noteworthy this is not a road in the physical sense. Hence this is a multi-sensory journey, where each height is different from the other, and with it change the landscape, colours, diversities, smells.
The undisputed star is obviously the wine, certainly the Etna D.O.C. The Etna wine could be white, red and rosé wine. It is obtained from the grapes of four native vineyards, born on volcanic soil, and fed by the sandy and lava soils of Etna.
Above all the Etna wine route is made by man and the link that they have with Etna. The wineries, farms, wine shops, museums, agri-food companies, which inhabit the Etna wine road, are testimonies of this bond.
The Etna wine route stretches from South to North side, from 400 to 1000 meters of altitude. Therefore it runs along volcanic roads, historic millstones, lava flows, rural houses and villages made with lava stones. The Etna wine route is an a history of perfumes, traditions and flavours. A story that tells of vineyards kissed by the warmth of the sun, embraced by the sea breeze, and caressed by volcanic ash.

If you visit Sicily, thia journey is a stop not to be missed. Certainly, tis route is journey to discover totally the Etnean territory, to know and appreciate every aspect of the Etna Volcano.
